Ninja Tools and Weapons is an excellent source of information for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the historical, ethnographic, linguistic, and even psychological origins of Ninjutsu. This book is essentially an interdisciplinary study into not only the tools and weapons, as the name implies, but also the mind and soul of who the ninja were (and are). It is without a doubt the most interesting book I have read this year.
In order to really understand how and why the ninja used so many uniquely different tools and weapons, Dr. Farivar first takes us on a journey into ancient Japan to look at the genesis of the ninja as a whole; who they were, where they came from, and the various cultural and historical events that gave rise to their culture in the first place. It is through this holisitic lens that the tools and weapons are then described. This gives the reader an in-depth understanding of the weapons and how they were transformed from basic tools.
Pretty much everybody knows what a "ninja star" is, but how many knew that shuriken (their more proper name) evolved from construction nails and spikes? Rather than just say that shurkien come in a variety of shapes and sizes, Dr. Farivar describes what common tools they were originally derived from, explains many of their stylistic differences and what influenced those differences, and discusses their myriad uses other than being thrown. He does this for all of the weapons in the book, telling the reader not only of their function but also of their foundations, so that we can have a deeper and broader understanding of their use.
Whether you're a martial artist, a history buff, or just a fan of ninja lore in general, this book is well worth your time and money.
