Inspired by the work of Ippolito Desideri, a pioneering, eighteenth-century Jesuit who wrote the first detailed account of Tibet, Ivan Cooper travels by clapped-out jeep and on horseback across the remote grasslands of eastern Tibet. In the company of an itinerant painter of deities who serves as guide and mediator he encounters, amongst others, Lama Sonam, a living Buddha held in reverence by the surrounding nomads, who summarily condemns him to rebirth in one of the Buddhist hells. In a chaotic monastic shanty town that has been illegally constructed around the residence of a living saint he narrowly avoids arrest. Alone and isolated in a land where few foreigners have set foot he is forced to re-evaluate both who he is and the fixed certainties of the culture in which he grew up.

As someone who is neither a great reader of travel books nor that interested in Tibet, this was a wonderful surprise. It was given to me as a present, and I enjoyed it from the first to the last page.It works on several levels: as a fascinating description of the author's often hazardous journey to both famous and little known parts of Tibet, and its counterpoint, that of an 18th century Jesuit, whose often amusing comments highlight the strangeness of his new world; as an introduction to aspects of Buddhist practices and philosophy; and, for me the most intriguing strand, the author's reflection on the self, what it is, how it is affected by being immersed in a completely different culture, how well we can know it, and whether and how we can ever get close to that of another person.
An equally attractive side of this book is its unique style, an extraordinary combination of erudite, vivid, ornate, and earthy language.
I can highly recommend this book to any reader with or without prior knowledge of Tibet and its culture and religion.

Tibet An Acccidental Pilgrimage eBook Ivan Cooper Reviews
Really beautifully written the author describes scenes of intense surrealism that those how have never travelled within China would hardly believe to be the truth. Though there are definitely places of astonishing beauty and personalities that the reader will long to meet personally, one might wonder why anybody, of his own free will, is undertaking such a tough journey. The cold, the hunger, the culture shock, Ivan Cooper has gone through it, which is fortunate indeed for all lovers of good books because he wrote a wonderful account of his journey which tells nothing but the truth. I can’t wait to read his next.
